Get to know your plants.
Help them feel at home.
A little observation goes a long way. Start with the basics, then adjust your care to the plant and the place it lives.
Six habits to start with
- Know what you’re growing. Identify your plant before choosing a care routine. A fern and a cactus have different needs.
- Find suitable light. Check the needs of your plant and watch how sunlight changes near your windows during the day.
- Check before watering. Feel the potting mix and consider the species, pot and season. A fixed weekly schedule won’t suit every plant.
- Let excess water drain. For plants grown in potting mix, drainage holes help prevent water from collecting around the roots. Empty standing water from saucers.
- Notice changes. Look at both sides of the leaves and inspect new plants for pests. Yellowing or drooping can have several causes.
- Keep a small record. Note watering, changes in light and new growth. Photos can help you see what has changed over time.
